Mike Beedle, Ph.D. and John Cerwin both had run-of-the-mill IT consulting firms that were started at a time when infrastructure, Y2K and e-commerce were just becoming buzz words. When the economy tanked and companies drastically reduced their spending on anything relating to technology, they found themselves competing with other IT firms on price alone.

"I owned a consulting company that was more of a generic practice with no competitive advantage. I realized that the days you could focus just on technology were gone. We decided to apply skills to a business problem that would become specialty," says Beedle, a leading tech author who has his Ph.D. in physics and an impressive work history with IBM, Goldman Sachs and others.

"We became familiar with HIPAA [legislation that dictates privacy and security measures related to personal health information] privacy laws and realized that most companies wouldn't be able to comply because there were no solutions on the market," says Cerwin.

They formed HIPAA Accelerator, Inc. (www.hipaaccelerator.com) last October and used their unique programming skills to build a robust, affordable, off-the-shelf technology solution that today's cost conscious companies found most appealing. They became profitable almost immediately, in part because they approached industry veterans to market the technology instead of building their own sales force.

Jeff Fusile, national partner-in-charge of the HIPAA practice at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, raves about the company. "We've been working with them for about six months. Their product is one of the few---if not the only---pre-built, comprehensive privacy solutions on the market. And the technology is easy to implement."

The Bannockburn, IL-based company demonstrates that software and technology companies can have a huge impact on the economy: the company has grown to 15 people in less than 12 months and expects to see a whopping $5 million in revenue this year.

HIPAA Accelerator Inc. the leading provider of HIPAA privacy software, and PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Healthcare Consulting Practice today announced an alliance to provide strategic planning, development, and deployment of integrated business and technical systems for HIPAA compliance. Read more in the joint press release.

4/15/02 - HIPAA Accelerator announces the release of software version 1.1.
This version introduces a new software module called the NPP (Notice of Privacy Practices) module. The NPP module simplifies the process of distributing the mandatory provider Notice of Privacy Practices document. It also simplifies the tracking and coordination of a patient's written NPP acknowledgment status.

Under the Privacy NPRM of 3-27-02 (§164.520), providers must make a good faith effort to obtain written acknowledgment of the NPP, and if unsuccessful, document the reason why acknowledgment was not obtained. NPP module automates much of this functionality. For example, whenever an NPP is delivered through system (via an online application, e-mail, etc.) a "good faith effort" is recorded in database along with a default reason for not obtaining acknowledgment. When "written acknowledgment" is received, the NPP module can update the patient's status. Further, whenever the NPP is delivered electronically, module is capable of obtaining "written acknowledgement" automatically.
